Write from the Beginning…and Beyond

Setting the Stage is the introductory manual for Write from the Beginning...and Beyond. The manual focuses on what teachers should know about the writing characteristics and expectations for the students they teach. Each section is designed to build on and support the preceding section. Narrative Writing is often referred to as story writing. Written narratives require strong structure and essential elements that are unique to this style of writing. Participants in the training will learn how to:
  • Understand the five components for Write from the Beginning ...and Beyond.
  • Focus on developmental characteristics of students at each grade level.
  • Understand the importance of the essential criteria (main idea, supporting details, elaboration, organization, coherence, conventions, and voice)
  • Be provided with short, focused, and interactive Min-Lessons based on the Essential Criteria of effective writing.
  • Utilize Thinking Journals for cross-curricular writing.
  • Include step-by-step guidelines for teacher directed modeling, suggested prompts, analytic rubrics to guide instruction.
  • Be able to distinguish between narratives organized chronologically and categorically.
  • Be provided with additional resources such as guides for student conferencing and suggested literature to teach the essential criteria of effective writing.
